Homeland Security Act: Homeland Security can be compromised if municipal, state and federal agencies do not protect old computers with sensitive data on them. In some instances it may be illegal and more often ill-advised to process, recycle, or sell old computers overseas that have not been sanitized. The Homeland Security Act has given broad powers to those that enforce the act and has setup departments to deal with identity theft and crimes associated with financial institutions. These crimes include: bank fraud, debit and credit card fraud, telecommunications and computer crimes, fraudulent identification, fraudulent government securities, and electronic fund transfer fraud. All of this information is generally found on retired hard drives and other media. You could be held accountable if you do not properly process your ‘end of life’ equipment.
